Abstract
535,060. Breaking or scutching flax straw &c. FRISCHE, K. Aug. 30,1939, No. 24872. Convention date, Oct. 3 1938. [Class 120 (i)] A machine for removing the woody matter from plant stems, particularly from rough unretted flax, comprises reciprocating breaker bars arranged obliquely with respect to the direction of feed of the flax in which the flax stems lie at right-angles to the direction of feed ; the breaker bars being reciprocated at a highspeed of at least 750 to 800 vibrations per minute and the depth of engagement of the bars being very small e.g. 2 m.m. or less. As shown the flax 1 is conveyed by a device 2 to the breaking bars 6, 7 arranged obliquely to the direction of feed ; before reaching the breaker bars the seeds are removed from the flax by a pinned drum 3 and the roots are struck off by a toothed drum 4. The reciprocating breaker bars 6 are arranged below the flax and co-operate with stationary bars 7, the bars 6 being coupled to a pair of parallel eccentric shafts 61 so that they have a conveying effect on the flax which is supported by vertically-adjustable bars 8, these bars damping the conveying effect of the bars 6. The width of the bars 6 and the depth of their engagement with the flax decreases in the direction of feed. The conveying device 2 grips the flax at the middle of its length and after treatment by the bars 6, 7, a similar conveying device 5 grips the flax at its treated end and conveys it to a second set of bars which treat the other end. The conveying devices 2, 5 comprise parallel rows of blocks 12 having profiled or rubber clamping surfaces and carried by endless chains 9 passing over pressureapplying rollers 11 journalled in the frame 10 of the machine. A conveyer belt 12 conveys seeds &c. into collecting vessels.
