[Class 85.] A device for enabling a lost tool to be aligned with a fishing tool so as to be gripped thereby comprises a cylinder 4 adapted for threaded connection to the fishing tool 1 and provided with a slot 5 engaged by a plate 27 secured to an inner slidable barrel 11. The barrel has a depending skirt 12 with inclined guide grooves 13 on its outer face engaged by inclined extensions 20 on plates 19 carrying blocks 23 normally engaged in recesses 10 in the cylinder; the inner face of the skirt has a cam 14 co-operating with heads 24 on the plates 19, the cam having a bevelled lower edge. A spring 28 is provided to press the device sidewise in the well. In use, the device is lowered into the well until the lost tool contacts the plate 27 and causes the barrel 11 to move upwardly in the cylinder ; during this movement, the cam 14 spreads the heads 24 causing the blocks 23 to approach each other and span the tool shank, the blocks 23 ultimately leaving the recesses 10. On continued upward movement of the barrel, ribs 17 on the latter engage arms 21 on the plates 19 to lift the latter, cams 9, Fig. 8, within the cylinder then moving the plates 19 inwardly and the plates 19 carrying the lost tool with them to align the latter with the fishing tool 1.
