Abstract

355,276. Absorbent dental rolls. LADD, J. W. B., Katonah, New York, U.S.A. April 16, 1930, No. 12064. [Class 81 (ii).] An absorbent roll for use in dentistry for absorbing saliva, consists of a body of absorbent material, such as soft fluffy paper, which tends to disintegrate when wet, a wrapper of a non-disintegrating absorbent such as cotton-wool, and an outer coating of comparatively insoluble adhesive material such as starch. The shoets of paper and cotton-wool are preferably rolled so that the fibres extend lengthwise of the roll. The sheets 15, 17 of paper and cotton wool respectively are so arranged on a platen 19 that, when they are rolled by an advancing member 20, the paper 15 forms the centre of the roll whilst the cotton 17 is wound between the outer convolutions of the paper and is continued to completely envelope the paper. The absorbent roll so formed is caused to roll over a part of the platen previously coated with starch paste so as to receive an insoluble outer coating 18, serving as a binder, and is then baked to dry the starch. The paper layer 15 preferably consists of five or other number of thinner layers placed together. The apparatus employed is described in Specification 355,277 which is referred to.
