Abstract

354,719. Oscillating-vane engines. DAW, A. W. and DAW, Z. W., 11, Queen Victoria Street, London. Feb. 12, 1930, No. 4667. [Class 110 (ii).] Fixed-abutment type ; cooling and heating parts ; ; packing drums, abutments, &c. ; valves, distributing and cut-off ; working-fluid supply.-An engine, compresser, &c., comprises oscillating vanes 5 in a cylinder having multiple longitudinal partitions 3 ; a crank 10 is fixed to the axle of the vanes and connected by a link 13 to an arm 12 projecting from a beam 11 from which a connecting-rod 14 extends to the driven or driving shaft 15. Fig. 3 shows single-sleeve oscillating valves for an internalcombustion engine ; double-sleeve or other valves may be used in their stead. The cylinder of each valve 19 has inlet and exhaust ports 20, 21 and a permanent connection 22 to the engine &c. cylinder ; sparking plugs 55 are located in the passages 22. A cross arm 26 on the valve spindle is actuated by rods 27 connected to cam-actuated levers. When a pair of nested sleeves is employed, as described in Specification 323,483, [Class 110 (ii), Rotary engines &c.], the sleeves may be separately actuated by pinions meshing with multi-sector gear wheels oscillated by cam-actuated rods, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). The main and valve cylinders are surrounded by air, water or steam spaces 41 connected by passages 41a. The impeller is cooled by water or oil under pressure flowing through passages 7b, 7c, 7e, 7g, 7i, Fig. 12. Lubricant is supplied through passages 45, 46, 47. The impeller is packed by strips 48, 48a having a mitre joint and a pin and slot connection, the strips being pressed outwards by springs; its hub is packed by rings 53 pressed outwards by spring washers &c. The partitions 3 have lugs 49, 50, Fig. 5, fitting into grooves in the cylinder wall and ends, and spring pressed U-shaped packing strips 51 for the hubs, and are cooled by water &c. spaces. A duplex engine may be constructed by arranging two engines side by side with a common crank shaft, Figs. 18, 19 (not shown). According to the Provisional Specification, the apparatus may be used as a compresser.
