Abstract

282,263. Macdonald, E. W. April 19, 1927. Fixed-abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off; valve-gear and valve-actuating mechanism; packing drums and vanes; bearings, arrangement of; replacement of internal parts, facilitating.-A rotary engine of the. eccentric rotor and outwardly-sliding vane type having two or more vanes is provided with a rotary disc cutoff valve C having a number of ports equal to a multiple of the number of vanes and driven from the main shaft at a correspondingly reduced speed. Steam is admitted past a hand-controlled stop and throttle valve F to a steam chest H whence it passes by a port c<13> to the rotary disc valve chamber c2. The disc valve is pressed against its seating by a spring c<2> and is driven by a spider c<3> on the shaft c which is driven from the main shaft D at a reduced speed by a chain c<12>. The steam after passing the cut-off valve is led to a reversing D-slide valve G. The va.nes a are divided and spring pressed radially and axially and are mounted in various boxes a<1> which have rollers a<6> running on bosses b on the cylinder end covers. The end covers are also provided with bosses b<2>, b<3> to support the rotor rim, and hub a<7>. Live steam may be admitted throughout the stroke by means of an emergency valve E admitt.ing steam direct from the steam chest to the cylinder. The engine may have two rotors set one in advance of the other on the same shaft. The exhaust ports b<5> are formed in a fitting b<6> which can be removed so as to give access to the interior of the cylinder. The rotor is provided with end and peripheral packing rings and bars a<13>, a<9>.
