Abstract
6611. Baker, D. F. March 19. sliding vanes. The two parallel walls one of which has an annular flange to act as a distance-piece and also as a peripheral wall, encloses a drum consisting of two side walls, of which one has a hub 4 fitting over the main shaft 3 and carrying the outer ring 7 and the other carries the inner ring 25. The ring 7 has, cast with it, inwardly-projecting portions forming passages 8 for the sliding pistons 9, which are pressed outwards by springs 10 adjusted by screws 29. The pistons are preferably formed of two parallel plates, between which are arranged spring-loaded packing-members. Between adjacent pistons further spring-pressed packing - strips are provided, held in position by a ring 22. Adjustable abutments 35 are actuated through links 37 and a disk 38 by the reversing-lever 39, which can be locked in any position by the segment 40 and spring 41. Steam from the chest 45 can be admitted by means of the slide valves 52, which are actuated by the lever 57 through the disk 54 and links 53 pivoted at 55. The lever 57 can be held in position by the segment 58 and spring 59 so that the quantity of steam supplied to the engine can be varied. Exhaust takes place through the ports 60, so that the pistons 9 are free from steam pressure while they are being pushed in by the abutments 35.
