354,141. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Nov. 28, 1930, No. 35873. Convention date, Jan. 9. [Class 39 (i).] In a gas- or vapour-filled arc discharge tube for the emission of rays, for example ultra-violet rays, provided with an incandescent cathode 3 and one or more anodes 4, the deposition upon the wall of the tube of particles disintegrated from the cathode is prevented by providing a grid-shaped member which, without surrounding the path of discharge, is disposed laterally thereof and is preferably connected t the cathode3. Thegrid-shaped member may consist of a wire 6 wound upon a frame 5 supported by a wire 7 connected to one of the leading-in wires 8 of the cathode, or may consist of a piece of gauze. The anodes 4 may consist of nickel plates, and the incandescent cathode 3 of a tungsten helix coated with an electron-emitting substance. In the example the tube 1 contains a few drops of liquid mercury and a gas, preferably a rare gas such as argon.
