Abstract

351,138. Heating feedwater. ANDREWS. J., Kelvin Engineering Works, Milton Road, Kirkintilloch, Stirlingshire. April 14, 1930, No. 11724. [Class 64 (i).] Feedwater passing from an inlet 1 to an outlet 7 in a sinuous path through groups of tubes 4 composed of metal of high conductivity and free from air locks, is heated by live steam passing through the heater from inlet 8 to outlet 9 in a sinuous path counter to the flow of water and at or near the steam temperature in the boiler. If superheated steam be admitted at inlet 8 to heat the feedwater, desuperheated steam may be withdrawn at outlet 14 to supply auxiliaries. The path of the steam is directed by a horizontal longitudinal baffle 12 and transverse apertured baffles 10. A vertical longitudinal baffle may be provided in addition to form four passes instead of two for the steam, the water connections being then arranged to offer four passes also. The heater may be short-circuited by moving the valve 15 to the belt, a clack valve 18 then closing the heater outlet 7. Expelled air that accumulates in vessel 22 is allowed to escape by needle valve 25 controlled by float 24. Specification 1595/83, [Class 64, Heating], is referred to.
