PATENT Joan E. BLACK, or R'UMSON, NEW mass-Y, assrenon TO THE BABCOCK & ,wmo' eom PANY, OF BAYQNNE, NEW J EBS EY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY STEAM TEMPERATURE EGULATOR Application filed April 22,
This invention relates to a novel and improved steam temperature regulator, the novel features of which will be best understood from the following description and in the an- 5 nexed drawing in which the single figure shows a fragmentary elevation of a portion of a boiler and the regulating device associated therewith. This figure is somewhat diagrammatic in character, and parts are shown -1n section.
" with the usual water space and steam space.
The normal water line may occur in a steam and water drum 2. Steamgenerated in the boiler may be superheated in the usual way and conducted through'a steam pipe 3 to the regulator 4:. As shown on the drawing, this a steam pipe has a vertically extendingportion 5 and a horizontally extending portion 6, the regulator being connected to the portion 6 and located'below, the normal water line.
The regulator may be o fanysuitable form, but ishere shown as comprising a chamber 7 through which pass a plurality of steam tubes 8 connected at their opposite ends to an inlet 9 and an outlet 10, respectively. Theinlet 3 and outlet may be separated by 'a diaphragm 11 and may conveniently be incorporated in one of the-legs of a T-connection, the other two legs of which form part of the horizontal portion 6 ofthe steam pipe. In this way, steam may be'pa'ssed from the pipe through the inlet and tubesiback through the outlet into the steam pipe.
,The chamber '7 is designed to containwater in order totemper or regulate the temperature i of the steam passing through the tubes 8, the amount of ,heat absorbed by the watervarying with the level of the water in the chamber, it being understood that this level may vary Widely and intact may be-such that all tubes 7 are completely covered. In the form shown, the chamber is suppliedwith Water from the steam and water drum by means of a'downco1ner12 and a riser 13 connected respectively to the water space and a steam space of the drum 2. By this means, a

circulation v may be, maintained, the water heated infthe regulator tending to rise in the connection 13. Inorder to control the level of water in the regulator, a thermostat-Moi; v any suitable form may be placed in the steam q pipe beyondthe regulator, and this thermo-f stat is joined by a suitableconnection'15 to V a I a valve 16 which will thus controlthe flow of fluid throughthe connection 13 to the steam v i space of the drum 2. In this way, the level of. water in the regulator Will be controlled.
Preferably, the valve 16is so arranged that if, for any reason, the thermostat should'notop erate, the valve will nevertheless remain open,
thus assuring continued circulation through the regulator, which circulation in turn prevents the temperature "of the steam from the superheater reaching an undesirably high point.. l According to my invention, I provide a third connection 17, this connection leading :from the lower part of the chamber 7, which part will normally contain'water, to the water space of the drum-2. Preferably, this con nection 17 is arr'a'nged in' close proxim'ityto some part' of the boilerewhich is sufficiently hot to-impart heat thereto and, inthis form, II have shownthe connection as being closely adjacent the superheated steam pipe 3, which :will'thu's impart heat to the connection and cause a -circulation of water upward in the 'i connection 17 and downward in'the connection 12. This circulation will take place most actively'vvhen the valve 16 is partially or entirely closed, and will relieve pressure on the regulator, and also will prevent excessive concentration of the water in the regulator.
any suitable form, which will permit :flow in the direction indicated by the-arrows, but
'In order toinsure proper circulation inithe I i right direction, I providea check valve 18of will prevent flow in the opposite-direction. 7'
This valve may be provided withthe usual supply of water in the chamber, means for passing the steam from the pipe throughthe chamber while maintaining it out of contact with the water therein, a connectionfrom the upper partrof said chamber to said steam space, two connections from the'lower part of the chamber to the water space of the boiler, and means for causing a circulation throughvsaid water connections and chamber.
2. In combination, a boiler havinga steam space, a superheated steam pipe, a tempera ture regulator connected tosaidpipe and having a chamber beneath the normal water level of the'boiler, means for maintaining a supply of water in the chamber, means for passing v 'the steam from the pipe through the chamber l @While maintaining it out-ofcontact with the "water therein, a connection from the upper partof said chamber to said steam space, "two,
