Abstract

Mineral oils are gelatinized to produce lubricants of determined viscosity and consistency or a basis for toilet preparations by adding 6-9 per cent of a soap and heating to above 350 DEG F. but not above 500 DEG F. The oil may first be heated to about 250 DEG F. to remove water. The solidified oil may be melted up with more oil to produce a product of less consistency. Graphite or other solid lubricant may be added. In an example, 1,5 lb. of soft soap made from castor, rape seed or cottonseed oil is stirred into 20 lb. of axle oil preliminarily heated to 212-250 DEG F., and the temperature is raised to 450 DEG F. until frothing ceases. On cooling the product is a stiff jelly. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 3044/89, 16541/96, 16480/13, 11129/15, and 297,068, [all in Class 91, Oils, &c.].
