Abstract
350,713. High-tension switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Torok, J. J. ; 615, Mill Street, Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) June 4, 1930, No. 17289. Convention date, June 3, 1929. [Class 38 (v).] Switches of the outdoor or oil-immersed type comprising fixed contacts 2, 3 adapted to be bridged by a member 7, are provided with metal sheets or cylinders 8, 9, 11, whereby the capacities existing between the gaps and between the member 7 and an earthed frame 1 (which is the supporting structure of the air-break switch shown), are proportioned to ensure an even distribution of the potential gradient over the two or more gaps in series when the switch is open. In this way the switch can be worked at the maximum gradient at which it is. safe against arc-over. In another arrangement, the lengths of the gaps are proportioned to produce the same result, or a combination of the two may be employed.
