Abstract

Caoutchouc, synthetic.-Diolefines or mixtures of diolefines with one another or with olefine benzenes in aqueous emulsions are polymerized in presence of organic compounds containing chlorine attached to carbon or mixtures thereof such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, chlorine-containing aldehydes, acetals, alcohols, acids, and salts, and they may be soluble or insoluble, for instance carbon tetrachloride, chloral hydrate, trichloracetic acid and its sodium salt. The emulsifying agents may be soaps, alkyl-aryl sulphonic acid salts, salts of sulphonated oils or organic bases with organic or inorganic acids, hydrotropic salts, albumenous substances, sulphite waste liquor, humates, and saponin, and other additions known in the emulsion process may be added, such as electrolytes, oils, and other plastifying agents. In the examples, (1) butadiene and hexachlorethane are emulsified with sodium stearate and polymerized at ordinary or slightly raised temperature; (2) butadiene and dichlorethylene or chlorbenzene are emulsified with sodium stearate; (3) butadiene and carbon tetrachloride are emulsified with saponin; (4) isoprene and carbon tetrachloride are emulsified with casein and acetic acid; (5) butadiene, styrene, and carbon tetrachloride are emulsified with saponin; (6) butadiene, dimethylbutadiene, and carbon tetrachloride are emulsified with glue and sodium isobutyl naphthalene sulphonate; (7) butadiene, styrene, and carbon tetrachloride are emulsified with glue and sodium isobutyl naphthalene sulphonate; (8), (9), and (10) butadiene, styrene, and chloral hydrate, sodium trichloracetate or trichloracetic acid are emulsified with glue and sodium isobutyl naphthalene sulphonate.
