Abstract

349,006. Sights for firearms. CARUTH, W. A., 138, North Larchmont Avenue, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Nov. 15, 1929, No. 34990. [Class 119.] A foresight for smallarms and machine guns comprises one or more pairs of lugs extending inwardly from lateral vertical supports on the muzzle, so as to form one or more sight openings between them. According to one construction, a sight comprises a tubular member S, Fig. 2, which is adapted to be fitted over the muzzle of a smallarm and to be secured thereto by a screw H. Upstanding graduated walls 10 on the member Shave inturned lugs D, D<1> so disposed as to form horizontal and vertical sight openings between them. The vertical edges of the upper lugs D are parallel and subtend a width of 2 ft. at 200 yards range. For battle ranges, that is from 200 to 600 yards, it is stated that the feet of a standing human target should be sighted on the imaginary line F-F, Fig. 4, in order to ensure a hit on some part of the target. The inner edges of the lower lugs D<1> taper inwardly and downwardly. The taper is such that the correct elevation at any range is automatically obtained by sighting a human target so that it fills the middle third of the space between the lugs. The edges of the lugs are also slightly inclined in order to compensate for the drift of the projectile caused by the rifling of the gun barrel. For target practice the inner walls of the lugs are parallel, the correct elevation being ascertained by the graduation on the wall 10. In a modification, a sight adaptable for both standard target and military purposes is pivotally mounted on a pin 13, Figs. 8 and 11, extending between the walls 10. The pin carries two plates formed with inturned lugs, as described above, and either arm can be brought to the vertical operative position by rotating the pin. In another modification, the lugs are formed on a separate plate which slides between the walls 10. For antiaircraft purposes three or more sets of lugs may be employed.
