Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. GENARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewood, in the county of Harford and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sights for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to firearms having short barrels, and more particularly to the ordinary revolvers or pistols, including automatic or quick-action types of these firearms.

Among the objects of this invention is to provide means for permitting easy and accurate aiming of the firearm. A further 0bject of this invention is to provide a peepsight at the rear end of the firearm, which, together with the ordinary front sight used on this type of firearm, will form a correct aiming device.

The pistols and revolvers which are now in use are generally provided with sights which are open and these open sights have been found very decient for correct aiming of the firearm. My new construction overcomes many of the defects incident to the prior devices and promotes correct aiming of the fire arm.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a vertical elevation of an automatic pistol with my improved peep-sight attached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the major portion of the pistol being broken away. Fig. 3 shows the rear end of the peep-sight, as it appears to an observer looking through it at a bulls eye, the major portion of the pistol being broken away.

The pistol is provided with the slide (1) surrounding the barrel (2) and having the ordinary front open sight (3). At the breech or rear end of this slide I provide the peep-sight attachment (4). This peep-sight attachment may be made of any suitable material, preferably of the same material as the barrel and slide of the pistol, and may be either integral with, keyed to, or otherwise secured to the slide. This peep-sight attachment is provided with a peep-hole which comprises a portion (5), preferably of circular section, which is superimposed upon and continuous with a portion (6) of rectangular section. even below the top of the slide but I prefer to have the top of this portion extend to such a distance above the top of the slide of the automatic pistol that the juncture where the bottom of the circular section touches the portion of rectangular section will form a line of sight with the top of the front sight for correct aiming of the firearm. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 that the bottom of the bulls-eye (7) indicated by dotted lines, is substantially tangential with the bottom of the portion of the peep-hole of circular cross-section, and it is necessary that the top of the front sight (3) be aligned with the juncture of the respective portions of the peep-hole of different cross-section and that the bulls-eye appear in the position shown in Fig. 3 with respect to said juncture for the proper vertical aiming of the device. The walls of the rectangular section of the peep-hole, are preferably parallel with the sides of the front sight and together with this front sight afford a means for correct angular aiming of the firearm.

Although in the preferred form of my device the upper portion (5) is shown as of circular section, I wish it to be understood that my invention is not so limited but openings of other cross-section, for example, those of polygonal or elliptical cross-section may also be used. It is necessary that the upper section of the opening be of either different size or shape from the lower section, which is preferably rectangular, in order that the common boundary between the different sections may be readily discernible for correct vertical aiming of the firearm.

The present invention is not limited to the specific details set forth in the foregoing eX- amples which should be construed as illustrative and not by way of limitation and in view of the numerous modifications which may be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, it is desired that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

l. A firearm having a front open sight and a rear peep-sight fixed to the top of the breech-end of said firearm, the peep-sight opening comprising two portions continuous with and of different cross-section from each other.

2. A firearm having a front open sight and a rear peep-sight fixed to the top of the breech-end of said firearm, the peep-sight opening comprising two portions continuous with each other, the lower portion being of rectangular cross-section and the upper portion being of circular cross-section.

3. A short-barrel firearm having a rear peep-sight, the peep-sight opening comprising two port-ions continuous with and of different cross-section from each other.

4. A short-barrel firearm having a rear peep-sight of key-hole configuration fixed to the top of the breech-end of said firearm.

5. A short-barrel firearm having a front open sight and a rear peep-sight fixed to the top of the breech end of said firearm, the peep-sight opening comprising two portions continuous with and of different cross-section ,from each other, the lower portion being of rectangular cross-section and having its walls parallel with the Sides of the front si ht.

A short-barrel rearm having a front open sight and a rear peep-sight, said peepsight having a cross-section comprising a circular portion superimposed upon and continuously with a portion having a rectangular cross-section and the termination of said portion of rectangular section being at such distance from said barrel as to form a line of sight with the top of said front sight for correct aiming of the firearm.
