[Class 38 (ii).] Commutator switching arrangements. - An alternating current rectifier comprises a commutator mounted on the shaft of a synchronized asynchronous motor, the commutator having alternate segments isolated. Single-phase A.C. is supplied through slip rings and D.C. collected from the commutator by a special arrangement of brush gear. The commutator is composed of active segments 5, 7, 9, 11, interspaced by isolated segments 6, 8, 10, 12, the active segments being connected alternately to the rings 13, 14 to which the A.C. supply is connected. The four brushes are connected together in pairs. They are separately adjustable and set so that when brush 15 leaves an active segment connected to (say) ring 14 brush 16 passes on to an active segment connected to ring 13, the reverse operation simultaneously taking place at the brushes 17, 18, so that at any instant one of the brushes of pair 15, 16 is connected to one ring and one of the brushes of the pair 17, 18 is connected to the other ring. As a fresh set of segments come under the brushes a reversal of connections takes place thus giving complete cycle rectification. Fig. 3 (not shown) is a modified arrangement in which the brushes of each pair are placed close together so as to connect with the same segment. The brush positions are adjustable as before. In a further modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, each pair of brushes is replaced by a single brush having a suitable arc length. By adjusting the brush positions it is possible to make the commutator conduct only for voltages over a certain value. When three-phase supply is available a static transformer is used to convert the supply into two-phase and then each phase is rectified and the outputs combined. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 19729/92 and 8412/94, [both in Class 38, Electricity, Regulating &c.].
