Abstract
Materials containing aluminium and phosphoric acid, such as aluminium phosphate, are dissolved in hydrochloric acid, say at 60-100 DEG C., to give a solution containing preferably 100-150 grams aluminium chloride per litre. This is precipitated as the hexahydrate, preferably after evaporation and cooling, by passing in aqueous hydrogen chloride. Phosphoric acid is recovered from the mother liquor which has been treated at 80-90 DEG C. with air to expel hydrogen chloride. Alumina may be obtained by calcining the aluminium chloride.
