Abstract

The production of nitrates, such as sodium, potassium, or calcium nitrate, from aqueous nitric acid of, say 40 per cent strength, and the corresponding chlorides is carried out in a reaction chamber through which steam under reduced pressure is passed in countercurrent for expelling the hydrochloric acid, the acid vapours being rectified in two stages, firstly to return nitric acid to the reaction chamber and then to separate hydrochloric acid, the residual water vapour being passed back to the reaction chamber together with steam obtained by evaporating the resultant salt solution under a pressure of at least one atmosphere; live steam may be added if desired. Mother liquor obtained by crystallizing the nitrate may be passed back into the reaction chamber, and a portion of the chloride may be introduced into the rectifier which serves to separate the nitric acid from the acid vapours.
