Abstract
Alkali metal or ammonium nitrate is prepared by dissolving the chloride wholly or partly in aqueous nitric acid and distilling under reduced pressure with steam, preferably superheated. Nitric acid of any concentration, for example 50 per cent acid may be used and the reaction effected in brick vessels. The vapours may be passed to a rectifying column sprayed with water or a solution of the reactants to condense the nitric acid. The exit vapours can be condensed in stages to give a concentrated hydrochloric acid, and the steam re-used. The process is applicable to solutions containing alkali metal or ammonium chloride, and hydrochloric and nitric acids, obtained by decomposing the chlorides with nitric acid in such concentration that the nitrate formed separates. According to examples: (1) Sodium chloride is treated with 46 per cent nitric acid in a vessel fitted with a rectifying column, superheated steam being blown in while the pressure is kept at 30 mm. The reaction temperature is 45--50 DEG C. The condensed nitric acid is returned and the mother liquor, after separation of sodium nitrate, added to a fresh batch. (2) Ammonium chloride and 36 per cent acid are treated as in (1) at a pressure of 20 mm.
