Abstract

347,848. Force-feed lubricating. DAIMLER CO., Ltd., TAIT, J. N. H., SIMPSON, C. M., and BUSH, A. E., Daimler Works, Coventry. April 5, 1930, Nos. 10827 and 36969. [Class 12 (iii).] In a force-feed lubricating system for an internalcombustion engine wherein the pressure is regulated by allowing oil to escape continuously from the main piping 2 past a spring-loaded ball valve 3, two alternative paths are provided for the flow of the oil passing the valve, one of which leads to the sump while the other leads to selected parts of the engine requiring auxiliary lubrication, the proportionate flow through the two paths being controlled by a valve responsive to variations in the viscosity of the oil. The valve 3 is arranged within a chamber 7 communicating through apertures 9 with a chamber 10 formed by an expanded portion 11 of a spring-pressed sleeve valve 12 mounted in a casing 15. Openings 13, 14 are formed in the valve 12 and casing 15 respectively, whereby the chamber 10 is normally in communication with the sump in the crank case 1. When the oil is viscous, as at starting the engine from cold, the pressure in the chamber 10 increases rapidly, causing the valve 12 to rise so as partially or completely to close the openings 14 and uncover openings 18 in the base of the casing 15 which are normally almost completely covered by the serrated base 19 of the valve 12. Oil then flows through the openings 18 into a chamber 22 and thence through a pipe 23 to nozzles which spray the oil on to the connecting- rod big-ends, which splash it into the cylinders. As the oil warms up, the valve 12 descends until all the oil leaking past the valve 3 returns to the sump. Oil which normally leaks through the openings 18 drains into the sump through holes 34, 35. The springs 5, 30 of the valves 3, 12 are adjustable by means of nuts 8, 32. The first Provisional Specification describes an arrangement in which the spring-pressed ball valve is mounted within a chamber communicating with a cylinder which has an outlet leading to the parts requiring auxiliary lubrication and in which is threaded a screwed plug controlling a longitudinal slot communicating with the sump, whereby the amount of oil passing from the ball valve to the auxiliary lubrication points may be varied by manual adjustment of the plug.
