Abstract

Benzanthrone derivatives.-2-Aroyloxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof such as the esters and amides, are treated with acid-condensing agents to give the 1-aroyl-2-hydroxy compounds and subsequently ring-closed to give hydroxybenzanthrone carboxylic acids. According to examples, (1) the benzoic ester of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid is melted with sodium-aluminium chloride, and the product after separating treated with boiling hydrochloric acid followed by sodium carbonate, to give 4-hydroxybenzanthrone-3-carboxylic acid; (2) the benzoic ester of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic ethyl ester, obtained by benzoylating the ethyl ester, is treated with sodium-aluminium chloride, followed by concentrated hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate, to give the same product as example 1; (3) the Bz-m-chlorobenzoic ester of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic ethyl ester is treated with sodium-aluminium chloride and worked up as above.
