Abstract

346,468. Softening water. COPLAND, J. B., 5, Thornsett Road, Anerley, London. Jan. 16, 1930, No. 1608. [Class 46.] In apparatus for softening water by baseexchange baffle members are provided so as to cause the water to take a tortuous path through the softening medium. As shown in Fig. 3, baffle plates 10, attached to the wall of the tube 1 or to a framework or lining fitting in the tube, cause the water as it passes through the softening-material from an inlet 4 to an outlet 6 to take the path indicated by the arrows. The softening material is kept in place by a grid 8 held down by a spring 9. The baffle plates 10 may be replaced by a twisted helicoidal plate. Fig. 4 shows apparatus having several helicoidal baffles 7 fitted in holes 12 in transverse plates 11, the arrangement being such that the plates 7, 11 can be withdrawn as a unit from the container 1.
