Abstract

346,338. Thrust bearings. FLETCHER, G. H., 22, Glentilt Road, Ecclesall, Sheffield, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 30, 1929, No. 39758. [Class 12 (i).] Electric driving- motors of locomotives &c., when mounted or swung upon an axle, are cushioned from impacts with the track wheels by resilient means - preferably comprising axially slidable thrust plates, backed up by springs, rubber pads, &c.-interposed between the wheel hubs and the motor housing or bearing liner. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a thrust-plate 6, built up of divided rings 8, 9 secured together by screws 10, and coupled to rotate with the wheelhub 3 by one or more pins 14 engaging notches in a flange 15, is pressed against the bearing liner 2 of the motor housing by dished annular springs 7, the compression and distention of which are limited by a flange 12 on an extension 13 of the hub engaging an annular recess 11 formed in the thrustplate. The arrangement may be enclosed in a casing 17 attached to the flange 5 of the liner 2 and rendered dust-proof by leather, felt, &c. washers 18a, bearing on the hub. Resilient rings of rubber with interspersed washers of canvas, fibre, metal, &c., may be substituted for the springs 7, or, instead of an annular spring, a series of coiled springs or rubber plugs may be seated in recesses disposed around the inner face 16 of the hub. In one such arrangement, shown in Fig. 3, studs 19, threaded into the hub and with heads 20a located in flanged pockets in the composite thrust-plate 6, provide alternative means for rotatively coupling the thrust-plate to the hub and for limiting compression and distension of the springs. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the bearing liner 2 is slidable and springs 7a or rubber buffers are interposed between the flanged end 27 thereof and the motor housing 2a, a dust-proof casing 17 being attached to the flange with a cylindrical extension entering a groove 30 in the end face of the housing.
