Abstract

931,588. Axle box mountings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 1, 1959 [Dec. 3, 1958], No. 38990/58. Class 103(6). A railway vehicle axle box 10 is provided on each side of the axle bearing 11 with a bore 12 slidably receiving resilient units connected in series and arranged so as to be stressed in shear. Each unit comprises an outer shell 16 slidable in the bore, an inner shell 15 slidably mounted on a pillar 18 and a rubber bush 14 bonded to the shells. The pillar has a shoulder 19 resting on the upper shell 15 and dished disc members 17 are arranged between the middle unit and the upper and lower units, the rims of the members 17 engaging shells 16 whilst the centre portions of the members 17 engages shells 15. The lower shell 16 engages in an annular ledge 13 in the bore. In another embodiment the bores 12 may be provided in the vehicle frame and the pillars 18 on the axle box. A spiral lubrication groove 20 is provided in each bore which latter may also be used to provide hydraulic damping.
