Abstract

1,103,176. Springs. MIDLAND-ROSS CORPORATION. 18 May, 1966 [24 May, 1965], No. 22130/66. Heading F2S. [Also in Division B7] Relates to spring units 145, 160, Fig. 3, for supporting a bogie pedestal frame 5, from a saddle 6 carrying an axle journal bearing (see Division B7). Each spring unit 145 or 160 comprises a pair of concentric helical compression springs 146, 147, Fig. 4, each having a free height less than the distance between upper and lower opening seats 137 or 25 and 71, under no-load conditions. The inner spring 146 is longer and stronger than the more flexible short outer spring 147. The lower end of the spring 146 rests on the bottom of a load-transferring cup-shaped member 150 and the latter has an upper outwardly extending annular flange 154 supported on the top of the spring 147. The depth of the cup is greater than the solid height of the spring 147. Such an arrangement provides a variable spring rate characteristic, the lower spring 147 providing the required soft riding characteristic under light loads and the upper spring 146 providing sufficient capacity for fully loaded vehicle conditions.
