Abstract
345,725. Gate-operating (mechanism. MEARING, F., Belvoir, Leicestershire. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1883. [Classes 44 and 65 (i).] Two gates A, shown in plan in Fig. 2, are opened and closed in opposite directions by rods D having notches which normally engage with studs in guides Q pivoted on arms C fixed to the gates. The rods D are operated by cranks E fixed to pulleys F pivoted on posts G at the sides of the road, the cranks being on dead-centre when the gates are closed or fully open, the gates being therefore locked in either extreme position. The pulleys F are interconnected by cables H passing under the roadway, or by equivalent means. A cable L is wrapped round each pulley, and may be fixed to it at one point, and its ends are supported by posts M, N at a distance on opposite sides of the gate. Both gates may therefore be opened from either side by pulling either of the cables and closed from the other side by either cable. To enable either gate to be opened independently by hand, each gate is provided with a lever R pivoted about a horizontal axis R<1> and arranged so that when the inner end is depressed its outer end raises the end of the connecting-rod D out of engagement with the stud in the guide Q so that the guide can slide freely over the rod.
