AUTOMATIC GATE.
Application filed March 18, 1920.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Park, vState of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1n- Vention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates and particularly to automatically opening and closing gates.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved means for mounting a pair of sliding gates whereby they may be easily and quickly moved into open position, and which will readily gravitate into closed position. v
Another object is to improve the means actuated by an approaching vehicle for moving the gates into open position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of gates made and mounted in accordance with the present invention and shown in closed position.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same showing the gates in open position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, with the gates in closed position.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through one of the inner posts, on the line Ana of Fio'. 2.
Iieferring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the pair of inner posts, and 11 the pair of outer posts, said latter posts being arranged in alinement with each other and with the posts 10. Each of the posts is vertically and longitudinally bifurcated, as shown at 12, and slidable through the bifurcations are the gates 13.
As the construction of one gate and the associated parts of the opening mechanism are identical with those of the other gate, a description of one is deemed suilicient.
Through each of the posts 10 and 11 there is disposed a bolt 141 which rides in an in'- clined slot 15 formed in the gate. Thus,

gate will move vertically in the bifurcations of the posts 10 and l1.
Ektending across the gateway, between the inner posts 10, is a horizontal bar 16, o n each end of which is secured a pair of rigid links or arms 17, the said arms eXtending longitudinally away from the said ends of the bar. Pivotally mounted on each side of the post 10 is an angle lever, represented as a whole by the character A, the shorter arm 18 of which is pivotally connected with an arm 17, by means of a vertical link 19. Pivotally connected to the gate, between the posts 10 and 11, is a normally horizontal link 20, the other end of which is pivotally connected with the outer end of the longer arm 21 of the angle lever. As seen in the plan view, F ig. 3, there are two of the arms 17, as well as two of the links 19, the angle levers A, and the links 20, the pairs of such parts being properly mounted on opposite sides of the gate. It will also be not'ed that each gate has two of the inclined slots 15, for passage therethrough of the bolts 14: carried by the gate posts 10 and 11.
Disposed at opposite sides of the gateway are the inclined channel members 22, the inner or higher ends of which are movably connected with the bar 16. These channel members are disposed in parallel spaced relation for the reception of the wheels of an approaching vehicle, whereby when the weight of the vehicle engages'on said channel members the bar 16 will be depressed with the result that the links 19 will rock the angle levers A and slide the gates into open position. As the gates move through the bifurcations of the posts 10 and l1, they will ride upwardly on the transverse bolts 11i, which are disposed through said posts. Then, when the vehicle passes through the gateway, and down the other pair of channel members, at the other side of the gateway, the gates will gravitate into closed position.
It will be noted that the horizontal links 2() are offset at 20 so as to permit easy passage past the posts 10. The bolts 18', on which the angle levers are mounted, eX- tend through the posts 10, and on these bolts, within the bifurcations of the posts, the gates are supported.
The combined weights of the gates are sufiicient to permit them to gravitate into closed position and actuate the angle levers and as the gate slides toward open position, the links, so as to raise the bar 16 into its normal 110 position, and the inclined channel members into position for operation from either side of the gateway.
What is claimed is: In an approach opening gate, the combination with a plurality of alined and bifurcated posts, transverse bolts disposed through the posts, a pair of gates slidable y within the bifurcations of theposts Vand having longitudinal and inclined slots receiving the said bolts therethrough, a bar disposed horizontally between the. inner of the posts and extending across the gateway,
