(eras-5s) This invention relates to rthat type of gate which is provided lwith upper and lower hinges; the lower hinge being 'in' the form of a pintle seated in a horizontally shiftable carriage, so that when the carriage l-is shifted laterally of the gate, the latter is thrown out of plumb so that it will swing open by gravity.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide, in a gate of the above kind, improved means for mounting the gate so that it may be thrown out of plumb, and improved means operable by the wheel of a vehicle for shifting the carriage to throw the gate out of plumb.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description when considered-in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter kmore fully described, shown in the drawing and claimed.

Figures 2 and 3 are somewhat diagrammatic throw the gate out of plumb so that it will swing' openV byA gravity in awell known way. v- As shown, the bas'je" I6" includes' aplank I1'laid suitably secured upon the driveway along one sideofthe latter, and a board `or plate I8 secured upon the plank I1 intermediate its ends, said plate or board I8 having a central relatively large rectangular opening which is closed at the bottom by the plank I1 to form the recess I5Ain which carriage I4 is slidably arranged. Suitable tension springs I9 are interposed between the ends of the carriage I4 and the adjacent end walls of the recess I5 to yieldingly maintain the carriage normally midway between the ends of said recess I5, as shown in Figure 4. When the carriage is in this normal position, the gate is in a vertical or plumb position, as shown in Figure 2. Easy movement of the carriage I4 is promoted by providing the same with bottom antifriction rollers 20 arranged to ride ori the bottom of the recess I5 and side antifriction rollers 2|` arranged to ride on the side ,walls of the recess I5, as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5. In Figure 3, the carriage I4 is shown views showingthe gate proper in end elevation n and respectively illustrating the gate in a plumb position and in an out-of-plumb position.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail view illustrating the lower hinge of the gate and showing the shiftable carriage and adjacent parts in longitudinal section.
Figure 5 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the gate proper is shown as composed of an upright bar 5 at the hinging end and a similar bar 6 at the latching end, said bars 5 and 6 being vrigidly connected by horizontal bars or slats 1. The gate is associated with a hinging post 8 and a latching post 9. The gate is hinged to the post 8 by means of a pintle III extending vertically from the topof the bar 5 through an aperture of an angle bracket `I I secured to the upper portion of the post 8. The bar 5 is provided at the bottom with a depending vertical pintle I2 that is seated in a shallow reces I3 formed centrally in the upper face of a horizontally shiftable carriage I4 reciprocable in an elongated recess I5 provided in a base I5. The arrangement is such that the carriage I4 may be moved in either direction laterally of the post 8 to in a position shifted to the right of the figure which results in throwing the gate out of plumb so that it will swing Vopen by gravity to the left of the figure, asindicated by'dotted lines. Oi course, the pintle I0 will be slightly loose in the bracket II to permit this lateral tilting of the gate due to horizontal shifting of the carriage I4. It will be noted that the plank I1 extends a considerable distance beyond. each side of the gate. As a means for moving the carriage I4, I connect one end of a cord 22 to one end of the carriage I 4, passing said cord away from the adjacent side of the gate, under a guide 23 mounted on the plank I1, and to an eye 24 of an inclined,
upwardly projecting crank arm 25 provided on one end of a rock shaft 26 journaled transversely upon the plank I1 by bearings 21. The crank shaft 26 is located near an end of the plank I1 and at asuitable distance from ther gate, and
- the inner end of the shaft 26 is formed with a crank in the form of a trip plate 28 projecting from the shaft 26 ina direction away from the gate. The springs I8 are assisted by further springs 29 in normally positioning the parts so that the carriage I4 is located midway between the ends of recess I5 and the trip plate 28 is slightly elevated above the surface of the driveway. From the eye 24,-the cord 22 may be extended back to the bar 5 at the hinging end of the gate where it passes around a guide 38 and then extends tov and is connected with a pivoted latch 3| engageable with a catch on the latching post 9, as is well known in the art.
The arrangement is such that when the wheel of a Vehicle passes over the trip plate 28, it depresses the latter and rocks shaft 26 in a direction to cause crank arm 25 to exert a pull on the cord 22, thereby raising and releasing the latch 3| and shifting the carriage I4 toward the vehicle. This results in throwing the gate out of plumb so that it will automatically open by gravity in a direction away from. the vehicle. The same carriage shifting and latch-releasing means is provided at both sides of the gate so.

What I claiml is: 2
The combination with a vertical hinge bar of a gate having a pintle depending from its lower end, a base provided with a recess, a carriage horizontally slidable in said recess and having said pintle seated therein, tension springs connected to opposite ends of the carriage to normally position the latter with the gate in a plumb position, and means connected with the ends of thecarriage to slide the same longitudinally, said means including trip plates arranged to "be depressed by riding of a vehicle wheel thereover and mounted at opposite sides of the gate.
