This invention relates to gates.
Objects of this invention are to provide a gate or a'door which is so constructed that it may be moved laterally fromthe roadway in a novel manner by means accessible to a driver or other person from either side of the gate, and at points spaced from the gate so that a driver, for example, may pull upon a cable and open the gate without dismountmg from the vehicle, and after passing the gate, may pull upon a second cable and close the ate. a Further objects are to provide a simple mechanism which is effective in operation for lifting the gate and swinging it into the desired position with a minimum of friction, and to provide a construction which is eminently practical and my be cheaply produced.
This invention is designed primarily for gates but it is to be understood that it is equally applicable to doors or other barriers of this general type.
An embodiment of the invention is shown inthe accompnaying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate and the associated mechanism showing in full lines the gate in closed position, and in dotted lines the successive positions occupied by the gate when it is opened; Figure2 is a view at right angles to Figure 1 with parts in section.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the gate is indicated by the reference character 1, and is of rectangular construction. The transverse slats or bars have been omitted from the drawings for the sake of clearness, but it is to be understood that the gate may be of any usual form. \Vhen the gate is in closed position, its front end contacts with a stop 2, which is carried by the outer gate post 3. Preferably, this stopis provided with a plurality of rollers 4 to minimize friction. On the other side of the roadway, a pair of uprights or gate posts 5 are provided which extend upwardly a material distance above the gate. These uprights carry a set of pulleys 6 which have axes extending at right angles to the plane of the gate and carry pulleys 7 which have their axes extending parallel to the plane of the gate. A pair of cables 8 extend over these pulleys and downwardly, and are provided with terminal members 9 which are hereinafter described with greater detail. The other ends of the cables extend over pulleys 10 carried by posts 11 spaced a material distance from the gate and adjacent the roadway and terminate in balls or other members, as indicated at 12.
The gate is provided centrally with a guide 13 (see Figure 1) which has an elongated slot 14. This slot is provided with notches 15 at its ends. A pair of pins 16 extend through the slot 1 1 and are carried by members l'Ton opposite sides of the gate. These pinsfurnish bearings for the upper ends of a pair of parallel links 18 on opposite sides of the gate. The lower ends of these links are pivoted to a stationary member 19 (see Figure 1). If desired, a single pair of links could be substituted for this double pair without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Atthe rear of the gate, trunnions 20 project from opposite sides and fit within slots 21 formed in the upper end of the links 22.
The lower ends of these links are pivoted to, a bearing member 23 carried bya suitable stationary post.
The lower ends of the cables 8 have their terminal members 9 attached to the cross head or member 17 by means of short links 24, so that the tension of the cable can be transmitted to the gate in a manner hereinafter to appear. 7
A second bumper 25 is provided, similar to the bumper 2, and is equipped with rollers 26 in order to minimize friction.
In operating this gate, it is merely necessary to pull downwardly upon one of the cables 8 at its free end- This elex ates the gate and causes it to swing laterally into the position indicated by the dash line, until it strikes the bumper 25. At this time, the gate is arrested in its lateral motion and settles downwardly, the slot 21 in the lever 22 permitting the lowering of the rear end of the gate, and the slot 14 in the member or slide 13 permitting the levers 18 to swing towards the rear end of the gate, thus lowering the gate so that the levers occupy the dotted line position shown in Figure 1.
WVhen it is desired to close the gate, it is merely necessary to pull downwardly on the other cable. This elevates the gate and swings it into contact with the bumper 2 and it then settles downwardly into the full line position shown in Figure 1.
Thus, it will be seen that the gate can be operated from either side to either open it or close it. It will be seen further that the levers and pins cooperate to permit the gate to settle downwardly at either extreme of its motion.
It is to be noted that both of the pins {pass through the slot 14, as previously de-'- scribed, and consequently maintain the gate horizontal in all positions. Further, it is to be noted that the lever 22 is not parallel to eitherof the levers 18. Consequently, as
the gate rocks to the dotted line position,
the pin 20 will 'ride up in the slot 21 of the lever 22, Thereafter, the gate will settle down after it strikes the bumper. The levers 22 act as guides for the rear end of the gate and'prevent its moving out of position.
It will be seen further that the construe I tion'isvery simple, and is eminently practical, and may be easily produced.

The combination of a gate, a pair of uprights mounted on opposite sides of the rear end of the gate, levers pivoted adjacent the lower ends of said uprights and having a pin joining their, upper ends,--a horizontal-1y slotted guide receiving the pm of said levers and carried by said gates 1ntel-mediate its ends, asecond pair of levers pivoted adjacent their lower ends at a point spaced from the lower ends of said first mentionedlevers and having slotted upper ends, pins carried by said gate adjacent its rear end and fitting within the slotted upper ends ofsaid last mentioned levers, and cables extending downwardly and operatively coupled to the'upper ends of said first men tioned levers.-
