To all whom it may concern: y
, Be it known `thatI, GEORGE E. SENER, a` citizen of the United States", residing at Unionville, in the county of Monroe and State of Indiana, haveinvented a'new and useful Gate,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates togates, more particularly to balanced sliding gates, and has for its objectto produce a simply-constructed and easily-operated gate whichis perfectly balanced, sothat it can be operated with the minimum of power, while atthe same time possessing the requisite strength toeifectually withstand all strains to which it will be subjected.

The gate is portable or mounted upon an independent and movable supporting base or frame, so that it can be readily moved from `place to place, and the structure of this supporting-frame, Which Will be somewhat longer than the travel of the gate, is one of the novel features of the invention. This frame consists of transverse footing members 11,

The braces 17 18 are still further supported by reversed diagonal braces 21 22. Longitudinal guide-strips 23 24 are arranged, respectively, between the braces 17 and 19 and between the braces 18 and 2O topreventundue lateral Inovement to the gate, as hereinafter explained.
At their upper ends the standards l2 13 14 are connected by a riding-rail 24n in vertical alinement with the bottom rail 16, and the upper ends of the standards will be connected, respectively, by cap-plates 25 26, `as shown.. The standards will be supported laterally by diagonal braces 27 .28 between them and the extended portions of the foot members, as shown, the whole forming a very compact, strong, and rigid supportingframe, which may be located at any convenient point and transported Whenever required. The parts will all be united by bolts `or other suitable fastening means.
The riding-rail 24au will be provided upon `itsupper surface with a Wear-strip 29 preferablyhalf round or oval in cross-section,
and will likewise be provided with a fiat wear-plate A30 upon its lower surface, these `wear-plates adapted to receive the impact ot' the friction-rollers upon the traveling gate, `as hereinafter shown.
The gate is designed to travel between the spaced standards and is constructed of a main frame consisting of a bottom member 31, top
bolted or otherwise secured together, the length of the frame being considerablygreater than the opening which it is designed that the gate shall fill.
Connected between the rails 3l 32 is a ver" tical intermediate member 35, this member so'located that when the gate is closed it will come'just inside the standards 14 15. The gate-frame is also provided with a longitudinal intermediate rail 36, connected by its `ends to the end members 33 34 and extended beyond the member 34, as shown at 37.
The panel formed by the members 31, 36, 33, and 35 is preferably filled by wire fencing material of any approved design.
'The shorter panel formed between the mem- ' bers 35 and 34 will preferablybestrengthmember 32, and end members 33 34, suitably 4 IOO the member 35 and extending above the riding-rail 24, so that the roller 42 will be supported in position to travel upon the wearstrip 29, as shown. l
The roller 42 will be formed with aperipheral groove to enable it to grip the wearplate and prevent lateral displacement therefrom and to cause the gate to travel without coming in contact with the supporting-framework.
The brackets 43 44 serve an important purpose in supporting the roller 42 equally from each side and preventing unequal lateral movement or strains and likewise effectually preventing the displacement ot the gate.
Rotatively disposed between the standards 14 l5 is another bearing-roller 45, with which the lower edge of the longitudinal member 32 engages as the gate is operated.
The member 32 is preferably T-shaped in cross-section, and the roller 45 will be grooved to receive this member, and thus serve as a guide to prevent any lateral movement of the gate. l
The portion of the gate between the members 34 and 35 will be made sufciently heavy to perfectly balance the longer portion of the gate, so that the gate will be poised upon the roller 42 as a center. Hence when the gate is operated it is not necessary to lift any portion of its weight, but merely to move it 1ongitudinally upon its bearing-rollers. By this simple arrangement the gate may be operated with great ease and will require the eX- penditure of a relatively small amount of power and can be operated by small children as well as adults.
The framework can be constructed of comthe uniformly-disposed bracing and strength- .ening features will possess ample strength to withstand all the strains to which it will be subjectefh The rear member 34 may be provided with a counterweight embedded therein, as shown at 46 in Fig. 3, and entirely concealed by the material forming the end member to insure the requisite balance to the gate.
The post at the opposite side of the driveway is illustrated at 47 and will be of any suitable size and will be provided with spaced wings 48 49, adapted to engage the opposite sides of the member 33 when the gate is closed and prevent lateral movement of the free end of the gate at its lower edge. l
At a point opposite the projecting end 37 of the member 33 is located a combined stop or support consisting of a plate 50, having eX- tended side walls 5l 52, connected by a transverse bolt 53, carrying a friction-roller 54, with which the projection 37 engages as the gate is closed to cause the gate to be slightly elevated and serving as a guiding means for conducting the projection 37 into an aperture 54 in the plate 50, 'as shown.

Vated and a portion of its weight thereby transferred to the plate 50, so the gate will be supported with sufiicient force by its own gravity to prevent accidental displacement, while at the same time it will be sufliciently yieldable to be readily opened when the necessary force is applied.
The gate structure may be modified to any desired extent to fit any size of driveway or other opening and maybe readily adapted to gates of all sizes and to gates employed in all the various localities Where similar structures are required.
The supporting-framework will be located behind the fence or other structure adjoining the driveway or other opening, and the spaced guide-rails 23 will prevent any undue lateral movement of the gate structure.
Any suitable arrangement of the fencing material may be employed, but will preferably be finer at the lower part to prevent the passage of small animals or fowls when the gate is closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In agate, a supporting-frame comprising spaced standards disposed in pairs and forming the opposite ends of the frame, a bottom rail and rider-rail connected by their opposite ends between the opposite ends of the standards and forming dividing means thereto, a lbearing-roller rotatively mounted between one pair of said standards, foot members connected to said standards and extending laterally therefrom, diagonal braces between said standards and bottom rails, and spaced horizontal guard-rails between said diagonal braces upon opposite sides of said bottom rail and spaced therefrom, in combination with a gate member movably disposed between said standards and having a longitudinally-disposed top rail in movable engagement with said bearing-roller, parallel spaced guide members intermediately disposed relative to said gate and extending vertically upward therefrom upon opposite sides of said rider-rail, a bearing-roller supported rotatively between said guide members and movably bearing upon the upper side Yof said rider-rail, and a bearing-roller rotatively supported upon said gatein movable engagement with the under side of the said rider-rail, substantially as described.
