ALBERT OLNEY THORNTON, OF OLNEYVILLE, RHODE ISLAND.
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,939, dated November 24:, 1885.
Application filed March 12, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. THORNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olneyville, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to gates, and more particularly to that class known as sliding gates and it has for its object to provide improved means for supporting the gate, whereby the same may be readily and easily opened and closed.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a gate which shall be cheap and simple in its construction and strong and durable.
The invention consists in certain details of construction, and in the combinations ofparts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of parts detached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A A represent vertical uprights or posts, which are arranged a short distance apart.
B represents a bracket secured to and connecting said posts or uprights. The said bracket B consists of the two parallel plates b a, connected at their ends by plates d,which extend beyond said plates 1) 0, and are secured to the posts or uprights A A.
0 represents a roller, preferably of metal, said roller being provided with trunnions e, which are adapted to bear upon the plates b c.
D represents the gate, which is composed of a series of horizontal slats or rails, f, connected by vertical bars 9. The upperrail, f, of the horizontal series f is provided on its upper and lower sides with tracks h, consisting of thin metal bars. The upper of these bars it has its end turned upwardly to .serve as a stop, for a purpose which will be more fully explained.
Upon the posts A A, at the upper and lower ends thereof, are secured brackets E, which extend outwardly therefrom, and are provided with grooves or channels 1', to receive the upper and lower edges, respect- Serial No. 158,608. (No model.)
ively, of the upper and lower horizontal bars of the gate, said brackets serving to hold and support the gate in position upon the guideroller.
F represents a post or upright, which is formed with an outwardly-extending pin, j, against which the gate strikes when it is closed.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to open the gate, it is moved laterally, and travels upon the roller, and as the same is not journaled, but moves upon the plates 7) c, composing the bracket B, it will be seen that there is little or no friction, and that the gate may be readily and easily opened. The upturned end of the track on the upper rail strikes against the inner bracket, E, when the gate is fully opened, and serves as a stop to prevent further movement.
The gate above described is simple in its construction, strong and durable, not likely to get out of order, and is readily and easily operated.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination, with posts or uprights, of a bracket connecting the same, and consisting of the parallel plates b 0, connected at their ends by plates d,extended beyond the said plates 6 0, a roller mounted to travel upon the upper edges of plates b c, and a gate supported on the roller, as set forth.
2. The combination, with posts or uprights, of a bracket connecting the same, a guideroller loosely mounted on said bracket, a gate having metal bars secured to the upper and lower sides of its top rail, and guide brackets secured to the upper and lower ends of the posts or uprights, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with posts or uprights, of a bracket connecting the same, a guideroller loosely mounted on said bracket, a gate having tracks, as shown, one of which is provided with an upturned end, and guidebrackets secured to the upper and lower ends of the posts or uprights, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: ALBERT OLNEY THORNTON.
WM. F. KING, MARY 'L. Mason.
