GATE
Filed Feb. 21, 1928 v 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I Patented June 24, 1930 SEBASTIANO F. CANGEMI AND ANTHONY CANGEMI, 01? HOUSTON,
TEXAS GATE Application filed. Februaiy 21, 1928. Serial No. 255,886.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a gate.
One object of the invention is to provide a gate of the character described which is mounted on mechanism operable by a vehicle approaching the gate whereby the gate may be opened and which will automatically close the gate when the vehicle has passed through.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gate and mechanism whereon the gate is mounted and whereby the gate will be normally maintained in the closed position.
WVith the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein v Figure 1 shows a side view of the gate.
Figure 2 shows a plan view and Figure 3 show a cross sectional view thereof taken on the line 83 of Figure 1.
In the drawings the numerals 1, 2 designnate the gate posts to the upper ends of which the beam 3 is secured, said beam being extended one way beyond the gate opening, said extended end being supported on the post 4:. There is a pivotally mounted supporting rod 5, mounted on the beam 3 and coextensive, in length, with the beam 3. There is a gate, of any desired construction, equipped with upstanding hanger arms 7 7 whose upper ends are bifurcated and embrace the rod 5 and have the sheaves 8, 8 mounted between the fingers thereof, which ride on the rod 5 on opposite sides of the pivot thereof. Upstanding from the upper ends of the posts 2 and i are the guides 9, 9 which prevent the rod 5 from swinging on a vertical axis.
WVhen the gate is closed the I'OC 5 declines, slightly toward the post 2, and the end or said rod, adjacent said post- 2 is slightly upwardly curved.
There is a lever 10 pivotally mounted on the post 2, near its lower end and a link 11 connects the outer end of this lever with the corresponding end of the rod 5. The
inner end of this lever is connected to the guide 12 which works in a vertical guideway 13 and is mounted on the coil spring 1%. This spring 14: normally holds the guide 12 elevated.
On opposite sides of the gate are the channel like tracks 15, 15, whose outer ends have the lateral pintles 16, 16 which work in oblong bearings 17, 17 in the foundation 18. The inner ends of the tracks are connected by a link 19, one end of which is se cured to the under side of one of the racks and whose other end is pivotally connected to the under side or the other track, said link 19 resting on the inner end of the lever 10.
As the vehicle approaches the gate the wheels, on one side should be made to run in the approaching track 15. The weight of the load will lower he adjacent ends of said tracks and the inner end of the lever 10 will be depressed and its outer end ele vated acting through the link 11 to elevate the corresponding end of the rod 5 and the gate will then move into open position by gravity. When the vehicle has cleared the other track the spring 1 1 will elevate the tracks to original position and the position of the rod 5 will be reversed through "he pull spring 20, one end of which is attached to the post 2 and whose other end is attached to the corresponding end of the rod 5.- Thereupon the gate will move by gravity into closed position and will be stopped. by the stop 21 carried by the post 2 and will be secured in closed position by the engagement of the catch 22, carried by the gate end, over the pin 23, carried by the post 2.
The right is reserved to make such mechanical changes, substitutions and modifi cations as may be comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat we claim is 1. A device of the character described including upright posts, a beam on said posts, a track mounted on said beam, to pivot on a substantially horizontal axis, a gate, carriers connected to the gate, and movable on said track to carry the gate into open and closed position, a spring normally holding said track in position to maintain thegate in closed position, by gravity, and mechanism operable to move the gate into another position to elfect the movement of the gate, by gravity,,into open position, said mechanism comprising a pivotally mounted. lever, yieldable means supporting one end of said lever, a rod connecting the other end of said lever to the corresponding end of said track and oppositely disposed vehicle tracks, linked together at one end, said.
linked ends being supported on the supported end of said lever. I
2. A device of the character described in cluding gate posts, a beam mounted on the posts, a track mounted to pivot vertically on said beam, apivoted lever, a link connecting one end of the track with one end of said lever, yieldable means normally holding the other end of said lever elevated, a gate, carriers movable along said track and supporting said gate, oppositely disposed, aligned vehicle tracks having adjacent ends supported by the elevated end of said lever, and a rigid link connecting said adjacent ends.
3. A device of the character described including gate posts, a beam mounted thereon, a track mounted to pivot vertically on said beam, at pivoted lever, a rigid link connecting one end of the track With one end of said lever, yieldable means normally holding the other end of said lever elevated, a gate, carriers movable along said track and support ing said gate, oppositely disposed, aligned vehicle tracks having adjacent ends sup ported by the elevated end of said lever, and vchose other ends have sliding connections with a. fixed anchor, and a link pivotally connecting said adjacent ends.
a. A gate of the character described including gate posts, a beam on said posts, a
track mounted 011 said beam to pivot on a substantially horizontal axis, a lever pivoted on one of said posts, a link connecting one end of the track with one end of said lover, yieldable means normally holding the other end of said lever elevated, a gate, carriers movable along said track and supporting said gate, oppositely disposed aligned vehicle tracks having adjacent ends which are supported by the elevated end of said lever, a link underneath the track connecting said adjacent ends, lateral pintles carried by the other ends of said vehicle tracks, a pair of oblong bearings at the other ends of the vehicle tracks, said other ends Working between said bearings of the respective pairs and said pintles Working through the corresponding bearings.
In testimony Whereet We have signed our names to this specification in the presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
