[Class 51 (ii).] Charging. - A device for the distribution of the charge in a shaft furnace such as a gas generator served by a cage having a movable base comprises inclined dist:ribution diaphragms arranged in the interior of the furnace and pivotally adjustable shutters arranged at the upper part of the diaphragms. As shown in the Figure, 2a indicates the base of the charging cage and below it are arranged fixed diaphragms such as 4a, 5a, 6a inclined so as to divide the charge into fractions varying with the areas they have to serve. The diaphragms are fixed between the walls of the furnace and an inverted V-screen 8 protecting the gas header 9. Movable shutters such as 4c pivotal about horizontal axes and adjustable from outside the furnace are arranged above the diaphragms. In a modification the gasintake is central.
