Abstract

344,061. Variable speed gearing. HAYES, F. A., Middletown, New Jersey, U.S.A. Sept. 2, 1929, No. 38212/30. Convention date, May 7, 1929. Divided on 343,988. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing of the torus disc type operating by the precession of intermediate rollers, the rollers are supported with their axis of rocking at a permanent angle to the planes of the discs. When a roller 19, Fig. 3, is inclined to its tracks on the discs 10, 15, it precesses or creeps sidewise like the front wheel of a bicycle, tracing out a. spiral. The axis, n, n, Fig. 2, of the trunnions 24 of the yoke 22 carrying the roller 19 is inclined at a permanent angle to the planes of the discs 10, 15. The effect is that when equilibrium is disturbed by a control member, precession goes on automatically until a definite position is reached, that shown in Fig. 3, with the axis p, p of the roller intersecting the axis m, m of the gearing. The gear control member thus remains unstressed in its new position, and the gear unit is torque-responsive. A practical embodiment forming a part of the twin gearing described in Specification 343,988 is shown in Fig. 4. The axis of the yoke trunnions 24 is shown supported at a small angle in trunnion blocks 33 rockably supported in the rockers 28 described in Specification 344,062. The gear control member may be an hydraulic piston as described in Specification 344,066.
