Abstract
410,151. Variable speed gearing. HAYES, F. A., Middletown Township, New Jersey, U.S.A., and CLOUDSLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., 5, Chancery Lane, London. Aug. 12, 1932, No. 22688. Addition to 344,061. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing with torus discs engaged by precessing rollers which are supported with their axes of tilting at a permanent angle to the planes of the discs in order to terminate the precessional action, as explained in the parent Specification, means are provided for automatically reversing that inclination to the planes of the discs when the direction of drive through the gearing as a whole is reversed. Precessional action initiated by a displacement of a speed-changing control member such as 6, Fig. 4, brings the roller axes back to equilibrium position when they intersect the gear axis for one direction of drive only. If the drive is reversed, either by the driven shaft driving back to the driving-shaft or by reversing the rotation of the driving-shaft, such precessional action would move the roller axes farther and farther from the gear axis until the rollers run off the discs or are arrested by a stop such as 21 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of Specification 344,062. Reversal of the fixed angle of inclination of the axes of the carriers 4, Fig. 4, of tho rollers 5 with respect to the torus discs, not shown, converts this divergence into a convergence with stoppage of the precession in a definite position of equilibrium. This reversal of angle is effected by throwing over a pair of carrier-supporting cross arms 3, Fig. 3, between the position shown and that of the chain line. This throwing over is effected automatically on reversal of the drive. Thus a friction shoe 7 upon a carrier 4 pressed against the side of a roller 5 holds the pair of cross arms 3 in its proper angular position during drive, but when the drive reverses, the reversed roller by means of the shoe 7 drags the carrier 4 back with it far enough to effect the throwing over of the cross arms 3, which are stopped in the other proper position. The cross arms 3 are supported on rockers 2, as described in Specification 344,062, the pivots about which the rockers 2 are rocked by the speed control member 6 being indicated at 1. In a form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the automatic throwing- over of the cross arms 3 is effected by reversal of the reaction between the control member 6 and the rocker. The cross arms 3 are integral with a sleeve 3 surrounding the stem 2 of the rocker which has a cross bar 2 and rocker pivot 1. The sleeve 3 has a cranked ball end 3 which engages a notch in the member 6. The throwing-over is stopped in proper angle positions by the cross arms 3 engaging the cross bar 2 as shown in Fig. 3.
