Abstract

344,003. Moulding cattle cakes &c. by rolling and extrusion machines. DRYDEN W., Grimshaw Street Foundry, Preston, Lancashire. Nov. 20, 1929, No. 35426. [Class 87 (ii).] Relates to machines for compressing and extruding or moulding cattle cakes &c., of the kind set forth in Specifications 269,612 and 276,896, [both in Class 87 (ii), Moulding plastic &c. substances], and consists in mounting the shaft of the extrusion die B, Fig. 4, in bearings which lie wholly on one side of the die, thereby allowing the compression member C to be formed with a hollow shaft C<1> through which tailings leaking between the die and the compressing member may escape. The bearings for the die shaft and the compressing shaft may be arranged to be interchangeable. The die shaft is carried by a fixed head, the compressing shaft being mounted in a head E which may be moved on the bed A<1> by a hand-wheel 3 for repair purposes, but which is held in working position by tie rods F coupled to the die shaft head, to prevent the transmission of strain to the bed. In a modification, the member C may also be perforated, a loose washer being mounted between B and C so that material is extruded in both axial directions. In a further modification the members B and C are duplicated at each end of the machine a central drive being transmitted to the shaft carrying the two members B. The members B and C<1> may be provided with mould cavities on their opposed faces. When the cattle cakes &c. are formed by extrusion, the extruded streams are severed by a fixed knife pressed against the rear face of the disc member B. The member C may be provided with a renewable working face. The member B is secured on its shaft by a nut which has a ring of internal teeth at its outer end adapted to engage with similar teeth on a looking plate adapted to be bolted at any desired angular position on the end of the shaft. Shields adjustably carried by the rods F project inwards and engage the peripheral surfaces of the members B and C to prevent lateral escape of material. The length of the extruded stream is controlled by a stop plate V, Fig. 11, whose distance from the rear face b<11> of the member B is regulated by nuts V<4>. Specifications 245,286 and 285,529, [both in Class 87 (ii), Moulding plastic &c. substances], also are referred to.
