Abstract

269,612. Dryden, W., and Dunlop, H. J. L. Dec. 9, 1925. Extrusion machines.-A machine for moulding cakes of cattle food, soap &c., comprises a pair of discs arranged at a slight angle between which material fed from a hopper is compressed and is extruded through perforations in one or both discs, the extruded portions being severed by a suitable knife or knives. As shown in Fig. 1, the discs A. B are mounted upon shafts a<2>, b<2> disposed relatively at a slight angle, the shaft a<2> being driven through bevel gearing and driving the member B frictionally; or the member B may be positively driven through worm gearing W. The member A is formed with a recess a<1> to receive a projecting portion b<1> on the disc B, the parts being bounded by spherical surfaces to prevent escape of material which is fed in at the top through a hopper and, during the rotation of the disc, is compressed and extruded through multiple perforations P. Preferably the disc B is interchangeably mounted on a hub b<6>. Thrust rollers G, J, sustain the disc at the pressure zone. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the disc B<1> is mounted upon a driven shaft b<11>, the disc A<1> being supported by roller and thrust bearings a<11>, a<12> from a standard K which also carries a thrust bearing b<15> for the shaft b<11> whereby the opposite thrusts of the discs are balanced. The space between the discs is adjustable by a nut b<19>. The disc B<1> is interchangeable, being formed of two diametral portions bolted together by ears b<24> and formed with flanged portions b<22> engaging recesses b<21> in a boss b<12>. Material forced into the interior space S escapes through ducts T.
