Abstract

Extrusion machines.-In a machine in which oil seed meal and the like is moulded into cakes for cattle food by compressing and extruding it through perforations in a rotating disc or ring, and cutting off the extruded cores into suitable lengths, the meal is forced into the mould openings by a series of contacting rollers so arranged that each successive roller is nearer than the preceeding one to the surface of the disc or ring. As shown in Fig. 1, the meal fed to a hopper G is compressed and extruded through a perforated rotating disc A by conical rollers B, C, D journaled in a bracket E. The rollers are in contact, the roller B being in contact with the disc A while the distances of the rollers C, D from the disc are progressively increased. The extruded material is cut off by a fixed knife K. The pressure of the rollers B, C, D on the disc A is taken up by a bearing roller F carried by the bracket E. When the material is extruded through perforations a<1> in a rotating ring A<1>, the rollers B<1>, C<1>, D<1> are arranged as shown in Fig. 4. They are journaled in a fixed part J of the machine and in a bracket E<1>, the upper portion of which is shaped to take a feed hopper G<1>. Fixed adjustable closure plates P, P<1> for the openings in the disc and ring respectively as described in Specification 245,286 may be fitted. The Provisional Specification describes also an apparatus in which the material is completely moulded to size in the openings without having to be cut off. The moulds may be through-openings which are closed at the period of compression by a plate, the moulded pieces being ejected by a toothed wheel or by percussive devices. The openings may also be fitted with cam or like operated pistons to form the bottoms of the moulds and act as ejectors.
