Be itknown that I, JOSEPH J. Another object is to provide a novel form ofdevice for grinding up clay fromwhich the bricks are formed while the clay is in the hopper of the machine; and still another ebject of my invention is to provide a handpower brick press which is of simple construction and can be operated easily.
Other desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Referring to the drawings which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 desig- Hates the hopper of the machine into which the clay is thrown, the clay being in its naturalcondition just as it is taken from the bank. The mold box 2 is arranged below the hopper and slightly in front of same, and extending rearwardly from the mold box is a table 3 on which the charging device 4 is reciprocatingly mounted. opening 5 into which some of the clay in the hopper drops when the charging device is in its rearward position, as shown in Fig. 5, said charging device being moved from its rearward into it's forward position, as shown in Fig. 3, to permit the clay to drop into the mold box.- A lower lunger 6 reciprocates in the mold box, and arranged above the mold box and in alinement therewith, is an impel-(plunger 7, these plungers being moved tower /each other to com rose the mass of clay in the mold box and t us form a brick, as shown in Fig. 5. After the brick has been formed the upper plungerandthe lower plunger both move upwardly so as to carry the brick out of the mold box, the charging device 4 having previously been moved into its rearward position so that the front end thereof is located at the rear of the brick. When said charging device moves forwardly to carry a fresh char e of clay to the mold box the front, end of t e chargmg device will engage the brick which at this time is en ported on the lower plunger flush with tie top of the mold box, and will ejlect said brick onto an ehdless conveyer or be t 8 extending forwardly from the maohine and having its upper surface arran cd-in the same horizontal plane as the tab e 3.' This endless conveyer is moved intermittently so that after a brick has been deposited thereon the next brick that is moved onto said conveyor will not-contactwith the brick that was previously laced on same, thereby preventing the brie s from rubbing against each other or marrmg the surfaces and .thus spoilin thereof as would lie apt to result dueto the fact that when the bricks are ejected from the mold box they are very moist'and comparatively soft. i

The die late 37'which forms the pressing face of the ower plunger, is also of novel con struction in that its engaging face is perfectly smooth, said plate being provided on its underneath side with a screw which extends through an opening in the top of the plunger and has a nut 38 mounted thereon to secure said plate in position. In the machines ing devices that secured the die plates to the longer extended clear through to the pressmg faces of said lates so that these fastening devices wou d leave their imprint on the brick.
In order that clay in its natural state may be usedin the machine I have provided the hopper with means for grinding up or pulverizing the clay, this means consisting of transversely extending grate-bars 40 over which a rotary kniie carrying member travels. This rotary knife-carrying member versely of the hop er, the arms of said spiders havin knife blat es 43 secured thereto. A knife blade 44 is connected to arms 45 that are loosely mounted on the shaft 42, these arms being of less length than those of the spider so that the knife blade 44 will be located within the circular mth in which the knife blades 43 travel. This knife blade 44 coo crates 'with those connccted to the s i ers 41 and thus forms a shearing device that acts to cut the clay up very line, the knife blades 43 also cooperating with the grate-bars to sever and grind up the clay in the hop er.

The sliaft 42 is rotated bymeans of belts or ropes 46 secured to the lovers 21 and wound around rooved pulleys 47 on the opposite ends of the shaft 42, a weight 48 being secured to the end of each of said belts so as tion and also rotate the knife-carrying membar in the opposite direction to that in which it is rotated when the lovers 21 are depressed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
i. In a brick-press, a su port having rolls journaled thereon, an end ess belt mounted on said rolls, means for feeding the bricks onto said belt as they are ejected from the mold box, a toothed wheel connected to one I of said rolls, and a toothed bar secured to the l member that moves the bricks onto the belt said bar being ada ted to move said toothed wheel; substantial y as described.
2. In a brick-press, a hopper for receiving the material from which the bricks are formed, a mold box arranged below the lower end of said ho peer and out of vertical alineinent therewitli, a charging device mounted between said mold box and the hopper for conveying the material from the hopper to the mold box, an endless conveyer arranged adjacent the upper endof the mold box, a
roll around which said conveyor passes, a toothed wheel connected to said roll, and a toothed bar pivotally connected to said char ing device for actuating said toothed whee at each operation of the machine; substantially as described.
3. In a brickress, a plunger, a movable member adapted to travel past said plunger, a pad carried b said movable member for applying a lubr1cant to the ressing face of the plun er, a receptacle for iolding a quantity ot' lu )IlOttIlt, and means actuated by said movable member for tilting said rece tacle to discharge the lubricant onto said p ;sub stantially as described.

In a brick-press, a plunger, a movable member provided with a pad for applying oil to the pressing face of said lunger, an oil-holding tank, a movable member for corn trolling the ilow of oil from said tank, and means for actuatin said member to supply the pad with oil and thereafter cut oil' the Oil supply; substantially as described.
5. in a brick-press, a plunger, a movable 'l'lltllllHl provided with an oil pad for applying oil to the pressing face of said plunger, a pivotally mounted cup provided ith an arm that projects into the path of movement of said mcmbcr, and means for su )plying oil to said cup; substantially as described.

7. in a brick-press, plunger-s, a hopper, a mold box, a r ciprocating charging device for carrying material from the hopper to the mold box, a primary actuating levcr for operating the plungcrs, a block connected to the charging device and provided with an opencndcd slot, and a device on said lever adapted to be scaled in said slot for aportion of the movement of the lever and lhcrcaitcr pass out. of said slot while the lcvcr complctcs its stroke; substantially as described.
