Abstract

Indanthrone dyes.-Dyestuffs fast to chlorine are obtained by fractional precipitation of the dyes obtainable by the action of formaldehyde or agents supplying the same, such as paraformaldehyde, methylal and glycollic acid, on impure N-dihydro-1 : 2 : 21 : 11-anthraquinoneazine, from their solution in conc. sulphuric acid, by dilution to not less than 70 per cent strength, or by extracting from the said condensation products, components not fast to chlorine by means of dilute sulphuric acid of at least 70 per cent strength. The purification may be effected by adding water or dilute sulphuric acid in the requisite amount to a solution of the condensation product in sulphuric acid. Products equally fast to chlorine are obtained by condensing formaldehyde, or agents supplying it, with pure N-di-hydro-1 : 2 : 21 : 11-anthraquinoneazine obtained according to Specifications 113,489, 184,193, and 320,397, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes, &c.]. The dyes may be subsequently purified, or treated with alkalis, oxidizing or halogenating agents and are greenish blue. According to examples, (i) water is added to a solution of the dye obtained by the action of paraformaldehyde on commercial Indanthrone Blue RS, and the precipitated dye separated; (2) pure indanthrone is treated with paraformaldehyde in concentrated sulphuric acid, and diluted; (3) pure indanthrone is treated in concentrates sulphuric acid with a different proportion of paraformaldehyde diluted and the dye separated; thereafter the product is treated with varying proportions of sulphuryl chloride, or with caustic potash, to give purer products of equally good fastness to chlorine; (4) pure indanthrone in concentrated sulphuric acid is treated with formaldehyde solution and worked up as in example 2; (5) pure indanthrone in concentrated sulphuric acid is treated with paraformaldehyde followed by manganese dioxide, to give the azure on separation, and this product may be reduced to the N-dihydroazine, and further, chlorinated as above; (6) a product similar to that of example 4 is obtained by treating pure indanthrone with paraformaldehyde and concentrated sulphuric acid; (7) a product obtained by treating pure indanthrone with glycollic acid in concentrated sulphuric acid is further chlorinated with chlorine; (8) pure indanthrone is treated with a small quantity of paraformaldehyde in concentrated sulphuric acid, to give a slightly different product.
