Abstract
Dibenzanthrones.-The brominated Bz2 : Bz21-dimethoxydibenzanthrones obtainable by the process of Specification 205,304, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are separated into two components by treatment with sulphuric acid. The less soluble component, which appears to be a pure brominated Bz2 : Bz21-dimethoxydibenzanthrone dyes cotton in greenish shades decidedly more yellowish and more brilliant than those obtained from the composite product, while the more soluble component, which gives dull dyeings which are not fast to acid, appears to be brominated dihydroxydibenzanthrone formed by demethylation during the bromination process, and can be transformed to a product giving dyeings fast to acid by alkylation. The separation is preferably effected by fractional crystallization from concentrated sulphuric acid; alternatively, the more soluble component may be extracted from the composite product by treating with sulphuric acid of suitable strength. Examples are given of the treatment of the product of example 1 of Specification 205,304 and of commercial Indanthrene brilliant green 2G. In another example, Bz2 : Bz21-dimethoxydibenzanthrone, obtained as described in example B of Specification 181,304, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is brominated in sulphuric acid monohydrate in the presence of iodine and the pure brominated product separated from the reaction liquid by dilution with water and addition of sodium bisulphite.
