[Class 38 (v).] Forward or backward rotation of a spindle 35 causes a contact brush 65, pivotally mounted on the spindle, alternately to engage successive members of two series of circularly arranged contacts on two opposed blocks 1, 2, the two series being in staggered relation to each other. The blocks 1, 2 may e.g. each have five contacts 8 and 21 respectively. The contact brush 65 is pivoted upon a pin 37 mounted between ears in a member 36 fixed to the spindle 35 and is acted upon by a dead-centre spring 63 arranged between a projection of the member 36 and a link 62 which engages a slot in the contact brush. Also mounted on the pin 37 is a member 70 also acted on by a dead-centre spring similarly arranged behind the spring 63. The fixed contacts 8, 21 are segmental and divided by ribs and when the spindle 35 is rotated, the members 65, 70 rotate with it until an ear 77 on the member 70 encounters a rib. This forces the member 70 to the right, its deadcentre spring completing the action, and during this movement the ear 77 strikes the contact brush 65 and carries that over to the right into engagement with a contact 21, the dead-centre spring 63 completing the action. Further rotation of the spindle 35 moves the members 65, 70 back again and so on.
