341,968. Signs. SCANTLEBURY, F. H., 1306, Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 25,1929, No. 32510. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1928. [Class 3 (ii).] In signs of the type comprising one or more glass plates bearing etched designs and illuminated through their edges, portions of the designs are incised to varying depths to produce different intensities of illumination. As shown, a composite sign comprises three sheets 3a, 3b, 3c, bearing complementary parts of the complete design, and adapted to be illuminated in different colours. The plates are mounted, together with a coloured opaque back plate if required, in a skeleton frame 6 which slides into a main frame 5 having an enlarged lower portion 3 containing the lamps 2, the skeleton frame resting on projections 10 and being provided with ridges 14, 15 which engage grooves 12, 13 in the main frame and render the device light-tight. Colouring is effected by coating the lower edges 3a of the plates with different coloured lacquers or other suitable materials, the remaining edges preferably being silvered. An effect of relief may be obtained by positioning the plates so that the representation of the apron, for example, is in front of that of the dress. Etching is carried out preferably by a sand blast, masks being employed to obtain the different depths of cut. The signs may be illuminated from above instead of below, and may also be double sided.
