Abstract
<PICT:0341462/III/1> Hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen are obtained by the alternate supply of air and hydrocarbon gas, with or without steam, to a bed of coke or refractory material, the blow gases being burnt with secondary air in an annular chamber surrounding the bed of coke or the like. Hydrocarbon gas is introduced at 10, is preheated by passage through an annular jacket 2 and enters a generator 1 by ports 6. It is cracked by contact with the hot filling material, carbon being deposited, and the hydrogen obtained leaves the apparatus by ports 8 and/or 9. The gas supply is then cut off and, if necessary, after a purge with steam, air is introduced at 8 and burns the carbon to carbon monoxide which passes through the ports 6 and is burnt by the secondary air introduced at 5. After again purging with steam the cycle is repeated. If inert gases or steam are admixed with the hydrocarbons, a bed of coke is employed, incoming coke being preheated by the portion of the converted gases leaving at 9.
