[Class 107.] A manhole cover is binged to its frame 1 in such manner that it requires to be lifted from its seating to a certain extent before it can partake of angular move. ment, and in its closed position it is prevented from being lifted from its seating to the extent necessary by means of one or more locking pieces 11. The cover may be in two parts 8a, 8b, which are each provided with a projecting hinge piece 8c adapted to fit between a pair of lugs 5c, 5d on the frame as shown in Fig. 1. A transverse binge pin on each hinge piece 8a is adapted to enter a slot 6b of vertical elongated form in the lugs 5c, 5d. The parts 8a, 8b when closed are adapted to rest on seatings provided at various positions in the frame and are retained in place by the locking pieces 11 arranged at each hinge. The locking piece 11, Fig. III, is provided with a depending tail-piece 11a adapted to fit easily in a space between the hinge piece 8c and the wall of the frame. A protuberance 11b on the tail-piece 11a is arranged to engage in a recess 4x in the frame to prevent upward movement of the cover and locking piece for more than a short distance. The locking piece is adapted to be lifted by means of a tool engaging in a recess 11c and can be withdrawn as shown at the right of Fig. III, thus allowing the cover to be lifted and moved angularly. The slots 6b in the hinge lugs may be open at the upper end, in which case the cover mav be removed from the frame or moved angularly as desired. The frame 1 is provided with an external base flange 3 and vertical walls 4.
