Abstract

339,723. Scott, W. H. Oct. 11, 1929. Worm-and-wheel gearing.-To enable a worm shaft 5, together, if desired, with its bearing- unit, to be removed from a casing without disturbing the worm-wheel, the unit 7 comprises a sleeve fitting a hole in the two-part casing 1, 2 and extend to form a bearing support 8 for the end 6 of the shaft cut away where it faces the worm-wheel, the end 6 being reduced to a diameter less than that of the root of the wormthreads. A lug 21 engages a lug 22 on the casing- part 1 to ensure accurate tooth mesh. The bearings 10, 11, which may be of roller or plain form, are maintained in position by a sleeve 12 and a ring 13 screwed to the securing-flange 18 of the unit 7. The shaft 5 may be coupled by a sleeve 15 to the armature shaft 16 of an electromotor.
