Combing-machines. - In a combing-machine of the Nasmith; Heilmann or analogous types in which there is a relative movement between the nipper and the detaching means, a detaching roller D, Fig. 1, is provided making intermittent rotating contact with the combing cylinder segment S to form a detaching pair operating in synchronism with the relative movement of the machine nipper and detaching nip, and in operative combination with a pair of independently driven piecing rollers P, P<1> adjacent to but not in contact with the roller D. The detaching roller D may be positively driven but preferably is rotated by frictional contact with the segment S, and may be supported by the means described in Specification 337,841. As the top piecing roller P<1> rotates counter-clockwise to re-deliver the end T for piecing, the roller D is stationary and serves to clear the roller P<1>, while, during piecing, both the rollers P<1>, D rotate clockwise and act as clearers for each other. An auxiliary roller p<2>, Fig. 2, which acts as a nip for the piecing end returned by the piecing rollers may also be provided when combing long fibres. The roller p<2> which preferably makes intermittent contact with the roller P, but may be in constant frictional contact therewith, is mounted in bearings 3 supported on springs 6 in a bracket 7 extending from the lever 8 which supports the detaching roller D, the rollers D, P<2> simultaneously moving vertically on movement of the lever 8 about the centre 9. A guide-plate 10 is provided between the last row of needles and the forward end of the segment S to direct the end T to the nip of the rollers P, P<2>.
