Abstract

338,109. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 9, 1929. Samples furnished. Condensation products are obtained by condensing cyclic hydrocarbons containing at least one aromatic nucleus but no olefinic side chains, such as benzene, naphthalene, or tetrahydronaphthalene, or their alkylated, halogenated, nitrated, alkoxylated or carboxylic ester derivatives, with diolefines, such as 1: 3-butadiene, isoprene or 2: 3-dimethyl-1 : 3-butadiene, in the presence of anhydrons inorganic halides which give rise to a strong evolution of heat when brought into contact with water. As condensing agents, aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, boron chloride, and boron fluoride may be used; " ansolvo " acids derived from such halides (Annalen, 455, pp 227-153), such as the complex compounds of the halides of zinc, calcium, or magnesium with acetic acid, may also be used. The condensation may be effected in the presence of solvents or diluents, such as benzine. The products are converted into difficultly soluble or insoluble elastic to hard compounds of high melting point by heating, and are suitable for use in the lacquer industry and in the preparation of artificial materials. In examples, (1) tetrahydronaphthalene is condensed with 1 :3-butadiene in presence of aluminium chloride, or ferric chloride, a resinous product is obtained, which is readily hardened by heat; a similar product is obtained by condensing piperylene with tetrahydronaphthalene in presence of aluminium chloride, (2) benzene is condensed with 1 : 3-butadiene in presence of aluminium chloride, (3) m-xylene is condensed with 1 :3-butadiene in presence of aluminium chloride, iron chloride, or " ansolvo " acids prepared from anhydrous halides, such as the " ansolvo " acid from boron fluoride and glacial acetic acid; the product, which may be purified by dissolving in cyclohexane and treatment with animal charcoal, is a viscous oil which is suitable for the production of coatings, lacquers, threads, or films, with or without the addition of plasticizers, colouring matters, resins, or other substances. (4) chlorbenzene and nitrobenzene are condensed with 1 :3-butadiene in presence of aluminium chloride,; resinous products are obtained. Benzoic ethyl ester is also stated to give a resinous or plastic product when condensed with 1 : 3-butadiene in presence of ferric chloride.
