Abstract
Artificial resins and oleo-resins are prepared by heating phenols or naphthols with terpene hydrocarbons in the presence of a catalyst. Suitable catalysts are (1) strong acids, e.g. hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydriodic, hydrofluoric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric and its anhydride, oxalic and sulphonic, particularly p-toluene sulphonic, acids; (2) salts, viz. anhydrous aluminium, ferric and zinc chlorides, silicated or siliceous earths; (3) chlorine, bromine and iodine. The products comprise mixtures of phenol ethers, terpene phenols, i.e. phenols with terpene radicles substituted in the nucleus, and polymerization products of terpenes; but in certain cases it is stated to be possible to prepare individual substances. Examples are given of the preparation of a phenolic ether by heating carvene and b -naphthol in the presence of a little p-toluene sulphonic acid to a temperature below 160 DEG C., and of the preparation of a terpene phenol by maintaining a mixture of carvene and phenol at about 105 DEG C. in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid. Examples are also given of the preparation of resinous bodies by heating phenol and carvene in the presence of zinc chloride or bromine. In all cases, the products are steam distilled and then purified.ALSO:Artificial resins and oleo-resins are prepared by heating phenols or naphthols with terpene hydrocarbons in the presence of a catalyst. These resins can be readily emulsified with water in the presence of alkalies or alkali carbonates and give stable emulsions, even when resin solvents such as toluene are present, which are useful for degreasing and cleaning purposes.
