Proofing against vermin; proofing - compositions.-Mixtures of hydroxydi- and hydroxytriarylmethanes or mixed hydroxydi- and hydroxytri-arylmethanes, useful for protecting wool, fur or the like against moth and other pests, are prepared by condensing in an acid medium one mol. of formaldehyde with two mols. of a mixture of phenols comprising a p-halogenated phenol or phenols with other phenols, or by condensing in an acid medium 1 mol. of an aromatic aldehyde of mixtures of the same, excepting aromatic oxyaldehydes and their sulphonic, carboxylic or sulpho carboxylic acid derivatives, with two mols. of a mixture of phenols comprising p-alkylated phenols or a p-alkylated phenol or phenols with other phenols, or a p-halogenated phenol or phenols with other phenols, all the p-alkylated and p-halogenated phenols having free o-positions. The phenols may be substituted, except in the o-position, by groups which do not form salts. Sulphuric acid, aluminium or ferric chloride or a mixture of sulphuric and acetic acids may be used as the condensing medium. The products may be applied to the wool &c. as described in Specifications 316,900 and 330,893, e.g. dissolved in an organic solvent or in a dyebath. According to examples of the preparation of the moth proofing agents, formaldehyde is condensed with impure p-fluorphenol containing phenol, and o-sulphobenzaldehyde with a mixture of 2: 4- dichlor-, 2: 6-dichlor- and p-chlorphenol, and also with the chlorcresols obtained by treatment of a mixture of m-cresol and p-cresol, prepared by boiling off the o-cresol from crude cresol, with sulphuryl chloride. By varying the proportion of the latter, mixtures of 6-chlor-3-cresol with p-cresol, 6-chlor-3-cresol with 3-chlor-4-cresol, or dichlor-m-cresol with monochlor-p-cresol may be obtained for condensation with the o-sulphobenzaldehyde. The mixture of o- and p-chlorbenzaldehydes obtained in the usual manner from a mixture of o- and p-chlortoluenes is also mentioned as starting material.
