Abstract
337,832. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 9, 1929. Addition to 316,900. Proofing against vermin; proofing compositions. -Halogenated hydroxy-di- and tri-arylmethanes produced by condensation of an aldehyde derivative in which the carbonyl oxygen is replaced by alkyloxy or inorganic or organic acid residues with a, p-halogenated phenol containing a free o-position to a, hydroxy group, but which may be substituted in the other positions by indifferent substituents such as halogens or alkyl groups, are used for protecting wool, fur or the like against moth or other pests. The products may be applied dissolved in an organic solvent; or they may be added to a dyebath whereby the materials to be treated are simultaneously dyed and protected. In examples for the production of the protecting agents : (1) methylol, methylenediacetate or the dimethyl acetal of o-chlorbenzaldehyde is condensed with p-chlorphenol; (2) 2 : 4-dichlorphenol is condensed with the acetal-like chlorides and sulphates produced by adding benzal chloride, 2 : 6-dichlorbenzalchloride, 2-chlorbenzalchloride or other nuclear derivative of benzal chloride to concentrated sulphuric acid; (3) 2-chlor-, 4-chlor-, 2 : 6-dichlor-, 4-chlor-2-sulpho- or 5-chlor-2-sulphobenzalchloride is condensed in chlorbenzene solution with p-chlorphenol, 2 : 4-dichlorphenol or mixtures of p-halogenated phenols; (4) p-chlorphenol is condensed in chlorbenzene or nitrobenzene with the chloride having the formula obtained by treating o-sulphobenzaldehyde with phosphorus pentachloride. Acid condensing agents, e.g. sulphuric acid, zinc, aluminium or ferric chloride or a mixture of hydrochloric acid and glacial acetic acid may be employed.
